If you’re an established buyer, the decision to build again comes with a very different mindset than the first time around. You already know how you like to live, the features and floorplan you value most, and the quality you expect. What you’re looking for now is customisation and refinement - a home that more personally reflects you, your family and your signature style.
In this day and age we really are spoiled for choice with so many ways to explore the latest home designs and modern upgrades. We’ve weighed up some of these options, and some new ideas, so you don’t have to. Happy house hunting / planning!
Online Design Inspiration
Virtual tours, social reels and online builder galleries offer a convenient way to get inspired from wherever you are. With this freedom at your fingertips, the amount of options and ideas can feel overwhelming. So why not curate a stylish and organised online home design hub to store all your favourite designs, elevations, architecture, floorplans and decor? Try any of these online organisational tools to get the ideas out of your head and onto the page:
- Pinterest: Create a Pinterest board for your build where you can save other pins that inspire you, or create your own with images, videos and articles you find.
- Asana: A free Asana account gives you a tool for organising all of your project must-do’s, build a timeline, and collate photos, plans and ideas.
- OneNote: Think of Microsoft OneNote as a digital notebook. Write in notes you want to remember, add images, embed videos or spreadsheets, include links and more. The free-form usage makes it so easy to display the content how you want.
- Trello: A Trello board for your home / build allows you to collate ideas, images, links and more, on separate Trello cards. Make lists to easily separate floorplan inspo from landscaping loves for down the track.
- Audio Recording Tools: This one may seem like an outlier… But if you’re someone madly scribbling notes during all of the builder meetings (so you can compare them later) then you might want to consider an audio recording tool that can convert all your conversations into text for later review and AI summaries. Don’t forget to ask permission to record!
You can find ideas from almost anywhere online - follow your favourite creators who are building or renovating, watch YouTube walk-throughs or deep dive into Reddit feeds to learn from others’ experiences. Then bring all the inspo along to your builder meetings - they’ll appreciate the visuals too.
The initial online research and filter phase is a great starting point - a way to refine your aesthetic preferences and shortlist designs that genuinely suit your lifestyle. The next step is pairing your digital discovery with physical exploration. This is where we get the steps up…
Perth Building Expos and Exhibitions
There are some great events in Perth dedicated to helping you on your home building journey. You will find updates on the building industry, the latest tech, sustainability advancements, style and trend ideas, indoor and outdoor design ideas and more. Having multiple vendors under the one roof can be really handy to weigh up your options and expand your horizons.
The Perth Home Show is one of the longest running events and usually happens in June at the PCEC. Sort your morning coffee, bring a friend or partner, and be prepared for plenty of exciting discussions and eye-opening ideas.
For an all-year-round expo experience, wander through Home Base in Subiaco to see a collection of products and features to consider for your new build. This one may be more suitable once you’re further down the planning path - but all of the suppliers in-store will have solid advice based on years of experience dealing with Perth builds, style evolutions and our harsh climate conditions.
Perth Display Homes
While virtual tours and online browsing are convenient and helpful for your early research process, nothing quite compares to the feeling of walking through a beautifully crafted display home. Standing inside a finished space allows you to appreciate scale, ceiling height, architectural details, the quality of finishes and the effects of light and seasonality on a space. Floorplans and measurements can look very different on a screen compared to how they feel in person.
Standing in a space helps you to imagine how you could live in it. A space you can imagine cooking Sunday lunch in, relaxing in for movie night or getting cosy and reading in (steaming cup of tea in hand). It’s the perfect opportunity to get up close up and personal - touch and feel the custom cabinetry, material selections and textured wallpaper.
Stand-alone display homes in Perth are usually by appointment only, and you will likely only be viewing one custom home, in one distinct style, where display villages provide the ultimate adult’s inspiration playground! Wander through stunning streetscapes with several homes from different builders all in a row, and speak to each of their representatives. You will truly get the most out of your visit this way, picking up different features and new ways of thinking from each home (check individual opening hours for each builder - generally Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays).
